This report is based on a survey of 532 software packages available in the United States, grouped under 12 categories: comprehensive systems; modeling systems; data management; monitoring; design; risk assessment; reference materials; reporting systems; calculation systems; enforcement; management and administrative systems; and cost systems. The report describes illustrative software packages developed by U.S. industry and then suggests a series of activities USAID might take to accelerate the application of these technologies to developing country environmental problems.
