Abstract
The district of Bougouni was chosen as a test site in 2009, and various activities were implemented, including the formation of healthcare providers and the creation of a Mother Kangourou (SMK) unit at the Bougouni Reference Health Center (CSRef). The MCHIP team conducted a rapid evaluation of the care of low birth weight newborns in Bougouni from January 20 to 27, 2014. The evaluation aimed to assess the implementation of SMK activities in the district and identify areas for improvement. The results of the evaluation were presented at an atelier de restitution, which brought together healthcare providers, community leaders, and other stakeholders. The atelier aimed to share the results of the evaluation, obtain the commitment of the district's healthcare team to dynamize the SMK unit, and develop a plan to improve the care of low birth weight newborns. The evaluation revealed several challenges in the implementation of SMK activities in the district. These included the lack of systematic use of SMK protocols, inadequate training of healthcare providers, and insufficient supervision of SMK activities. The evaluation also highlighted the need for better communication between the CSRef and the Community Health Centers (CSCom) regarding the care of low birth weight newborns. The atelier participants discussed several key issues, including the need for better equipment and supplies, particularly pèse-bébé and cartes conseils, and the importance of integrating postnatal care into vaccination and SPE activities. They also emphasized the need for better communication and coordination between the CSRef and the CSCom, as well as between the healthcare providers and the community. The atelier resulted in several recommendations, including the need for the CSCom to systematically fill out the fiche de référence/évacuation and to involve the ASC and relais in the follow-up of low birth weight newborns. The CSRef was recommended to reinforce supervision of SMK activities, provide protocols for the care of low birth weight newborns, and inform the DTC about the situation of low birth weight newborns during monthly meetings. The MCHIP initiative in Bougouni aimed to improve the care of low birth weight newborns and reduce neonatal mortality. The atelier de restitution was an important step in this process, as it brought together stakeholders and identified areas for improvement. The recommendations developed during the atelier will help to improve the care of low birth weight newborns in the district and contribute to the reduction of neonatal mortality in Mali. The implementation of SMK activities in Bougouni was a key component of the MCHIP initiative. The SMK unit at the CSRef was established to provide specialized care to low birth weight newborns. However, the evaluation revealed several challenges in the implementation of SMK activities, including inadequate training of healthcare providers and insufficient supervision of SMK activities. The atelier participants emphasized the need for better communication and coordination between the CSRef and the CSCom, as well as between the healthcare providers and the community. They also highlighted the importance of integrating postnatal care into vaccination and SPE activities. The recommendations developed during the atelier will help to improve the care of low birth weight newborns in the district and contribute to the reduction of neonatal mortality in Mali. The MCHIP initiative in Bougouni demonstrates the importance of collaborative efforts between healthcare providers, community leaders, and other stakeholders in improving the care of vulnerable populations. The evaluation of SMK activities in Bougouni revealed several challenges, including inadequate training of healthcare providers and insufficient supervision of SMK activities. The atelier participants emphasized the need for better communication and coordination between the CSRef and the CSCom, as well as between the healthcare providers and the community.
