Abstract
The program aims to improve reading proficiency and educational outcomes for 15 million children in Ethiopia by 2022, focusing on six target regions: Addis Ababa, Amhara, Oromia, Somali, SNNPR, and Tigray. The training program for Grades 1-4 Mother Tongue Teachers updates teachers on basic approaches to early grade reading and writing, provides practical instructional strategies, and encourages continuous classroom assessment. The five-day training follows a specific schedule, with each day focusing on a different topic: Phonemic Awareness, Graphophonemic Awareness, Vocabulary, Comprehension, Fluency, Writing, and Writing. The training program includes seven modules, each with a detailed plan and evaluation tools to gather and submit training evidence. The modules cover topics such as Phonemic Awareness, Graphophonemic Awareness, Vocabulary, Comprehension, Fluency, Writing, and Writing. The training program also includes a Strategy Tracking Chart, a graphic organizer where teachers can make notes and reflect on continuous classroom assessment during training. The training program is designed to provide teachers with a comprehensive understanding of phonemic awareness, graphophonemic awareness, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and writing. The program aims to equip teachers with practical instructional strategies to support students and encourage continuous classroom assessment. The training program is implemented in collaboration with the Ethiopian Ministry of Education (MoE), Regional Education Bureaus (REBs), and the READ II project. The program is supported by the American people through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The training program includes a range of activities, such as modeling instructional strategies, practicing phonemic awareness, graphophonemic awareness, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and writing. The program also includes a teacher training packet, which includes professional readings and a Strategy Tracking Chart. The training program is designed to be implemented in a five-day schedule, with each day focusing on a different topic. The program includes a range of activities, such as introducing the session, reflecting on what teachers already know, learning something new, and practicing phonemic awareness, graphophonemic awareness, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and writing.
