USAID. BUR. FOR LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN. REGIONAL OFC. FOR CENTRAL AMERICAN PROGRAMS (ROCAP)
Project to strengthen the capability of the Central American Institute for Business Administration (INCAE) to offer training in export management (EM), assist Central American schools of business administration, and support policy dialogue on EM strategy in the region.
1985
Abstract
Panama, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Honduras will participate. INCAE will develop a model EM training program by integrating EM into all its current MBA courses, and will develop about 90 new case studies in international marketing, productivity management, and export financial management. Between 30 and 60 top first-year students will be selected for 6-week summer work/study programs with U.S. or regional export firms. The project will host 25 3-day EM seminars a year (5 per country), or the equivalent in 12-day programs, for 5,000 (40 each) senior private and public sector executives; 50% scholarships will be offered for this program in year one, but will be eliminated by year five. INCAE will conduct a diagnostic test in each country to identify the needs of potential participating institutions. Instruction in management and the INCAE case method will be provided for 150 faculty from selected institutions through a 6-week residential program, consultancies for curriculum development will be provided as needed, and 40 current and future regional faculty will receive full- and part-time scholarships to INCAE. INCAE"s Center for Applied Economics and Policy Studies will promote intersectoral policy dialogue through a series of 5 2-day theme seminars yearly, in each country, for 40 persons. Research funding (one major study per country per year) will be made available to U.S. and regional scholars; INCAE will publish a bimonthly newsletter and a quarterly journal of applied economics and policy studies to disseminate findings and support dialogue. For general support, the project will: establish a competitive low-income scholarship fund to finance an INCAE education for 38 students; upgrade INCAE"s economics program and evaluate the potential of instituting a economics/business masters" program; provide Ph.D.-level EM training for 6 INCAE junior faculty; and expand INCAE"s library and office facilities.
