USAID. MISSION TO BELIZE
Project, follow-on to 5050007, to promote economic development in Belize, especially in agriculture and tourism, by constructing 24 bridges and rehabilitating 120 miles of rural access roads.
1991

Abstract
The project will encourage increased use of private contractors for road rehabilitation (private contractors are already used for bridge construction). Using surplus bridge sets procured under the previous project, the project will construct permanent bridges on priority rural road sections. If possible, bridges will be located on roads recently rehabilitated or on roads due for rehabilitation. The majority of road rehabilitation will be undertaken by local contractors. As a last resort, existing Ministry of Works (MOW) work crews may rehabilitate some road sections if acceptable bids are not received. All construction will be performed using the fixed amount reimbursement method. The project will also fund computers and software for the MOW, to improve the use and effectiveness of its road maintenance management system, and a small mobile drilling rig.
