Abstract
After providing an overview of the village, the report: assesses the village"s sanitation and water supply networks and soil characteristics; describes sanitation-related institutions and organizations, with particular attention to the role played by village extension workers; and presents results of an assessment of village sanitation needs, resources, and preferences. A comparison of excreta disposal options leads to discussion of the costs of and an action plan for the selected alternative - ventilated improved pit latrines. The rehabilitation of existing excreta disposal facilities is addressed briefly. A final section discusses the specific institutional networking needed for a concerted national campaign to build well-constructed low-cost excreta disposal facilities. Appendices include local 1981 census data; a copy of the household survey questionnaire used in the study and its results; water supply data; reports on implementing urban/rural sanitation programs in Botswana and on the results of infiltration tests; and a 22-item bibliography (1980-83).
