Abstract
Data were collected on: school location (name, village, district, province); students by gender and grade; teachers by qualification and teaching areas, by gender, and by grade; availability of textbooks by subject and grade groupings; school administrative personnel; and type of school by means of instruction, summer/winter sessions, and facilities, such as buildings and classrooms. This survey represented the first phase of five planned phases. Part I of Volume I is introductory and includes general information, objectives, methodology, framework, and constraints. Part II includes national information and briefly describes Afghanistan"s physical features, administration, economy, demography, and education; it includes basic national school statistics, and charts and tables showing some summary education data for the provinces. Part III covers all provinces, except Kabul (due to security issues) and briefly describes the geography, economy, administration, demography, and education of each province, including school statistics on each district and tables, charts, and plotted maps. This part also includes a provincial profile which includes information on total number of primary and secondary schools (boys, co-educational, and girls), student statistics by gender and level, and teacher statistics by gender and level. Part IV contains appendices and references. Volume II presents several studies which, though separate, when linked together provide an excellent profile of Afghan education in 1993-94. These studies include: school participation rates; alternative financing of teacher salaries; community support of education; teacher issues in implementing new materials; and an audit of the educational management information system accuracy. Also included is a pilot study for the second phase of Afghanistan"s education survey, which will collect data on, inter alia, instructional aids, class time, class size, and student performance.
