Evaluates project to clarify the mechanism of action and side effects of prostaglandins.
Shelton, James D. · 1981
Abstract
Final PES, consisting of a PES attached to a special evaluation (XD-AAJ-129-A), covers the period of 1971-1979; no methodology is mentioned. The project has successfully fulfilled its objectives to elucidate the basic mechanisms by which prostaglandins initiate labor and use this understanding to develop appropriate techniques for safe, early termination of pregnancy. Researchers have developed theories of "progestorone withdrawal" and "prostaglandin impact" and found the guinea pig to be a good therapeutically predictive model. The intramuscular sulprostone and the double dose vaginal suppository have also been evaluated. Research carried out in the project has had spinoff applications in treating menstrual cramps and postpartum hemorrhage.
