Abstract
PES covers the period 4/79-12/82 and is based on an attached special evaluation (XD-AAN-122-A). Project objectives have been achieved. The use of soil taxonomy was scientifically evaluated and found to be a viable method of transferring agrotechnology. In the course of research, host country personnel were trained, a greater awareness of the importance of soils in food production projects was fostered, and host countries gained more confidence in the use of agrotechnology transfer techniques and greater awareness of the need for soil mapping. A high level of interest was generated among organizations and developing country officials participating in project seminars and workshops. A final published report is the only major project output not yet completed. The project was well-managed and it rigorously adhered to a scientific and statistically sound methodology. A follow-on project - International Benchmark Sites Network for Agrotechnology Transfer - is planned to further broaden information sharing on tropical soils. In addition, follow-up efforts are being formulated in Fiji and Thailand. Action decisions are to: extend the project for one year without additional funding to complete the original scope of work; phase out field operations in the Philippines, Indonesia, Cameroon, and Hawaii in consultation with USAID"s and host countries; prepare the final project report; and publish and widely disseminate project findings.
