CORNELL UNIV (CU) IS CONTRACTED TO IMPLEMENT A SOIL MANAGEMENT RESEARCH PROJECT IN LATIN AMERICA & AFRICA.SIMILAR SERVICES ARE REQUESTED FROM NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIV (NCSU) WHICH IS CONTRACTED BY A RELATED PROJECT (AGRONOMIC-ECON RESEARCH ON TROPICAL SOILS) .THE OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT ARE TO: 1.DEVELOP THE SOIL FERTILITY OF AREAS POTENTIALLY ARABLE BUT PRESENTLY UNSUITED FOR CULTIVATION; 2.IDENTIFY OR DEVELOP OPTIMAL CROP VARIETIES & CULTIVATION METHODS UTILIZABLE IN THESE REGIONS GIVEN ECON & RESOURCE CONSTRAINTS; 3.DISSEMINATE PROJ-COLLECTED & DEVLPD TECHNOLOGY TO RELEVANT LDC AGENCIES & PERSONNEL, AND WORLD EXPERTS; AND 4.FOSTER THE CONTINUANCE OF SOIL MGMT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES IN LDC AGENCIES.

Abstract
THE IMPLMNTATN OF THE CONTRACT IS CARRIED OUT AT THE CU CAMPUS & IN THE HOST COUNTRY.AFTER CONTACTS ARE ESTABLSHD WITH APPROPRIATE LDC AGENCIES,ADVISORS ARE SENT TO PARTICIPATING LDC"S TO ORGANIZE FIELD & INSTITUTIONAL RESRCH STATIONS.THROUGH THE COOPERATIVE EFFORTS OF THESE STATIONS AND CORNELL"S ON-CAMPUS TECH EXPERTS,AREA SOIL TYPES ARE ANALYZED AND CULTIVATION METHODS,CROP VARIETIES & DIFFERENT FERTILIZER COMPOSITIONS TESTED.TECH REPORTS ARE PREPARED DISCLOSING THE FINDINGS OF THIS RESRCH FOR USE BY EXTENSION SPECIALISTS,DEVLPMNT PLANNERS,AND RESEARCHERS;ONE MAJOR REPORT IS A COLLECTION OF SUMMARIES & EVALS OF FERTILIZER NITROGEN AND SOIL FERTILITY-WATER INTERACTION EXPERIMENTS UNDERTAKEN BY CU & NCSU.FOR DISSEM OF RESRCH RESULTS TO LDC RESRCH,EXTEN & DEVLMNT PERSONNEL,NCSU IMPLEMENTS WORKSHOPS IN HOST COUNTRIES. TO PROMOTE CONTINUED LDC INVOLVEMENT IN SOIL MGMT RESRCH,PROJ GRADUALLY TRANSFERS THE SOIL FERTILITY EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM TO LDC HOST INSTITUTIONS.IN BRAZIL,FIELD EXPERIMENTS AT THE CERRADO CENTER ARE BEING TURNED OVER TO EMBRAPA.IN GHANA,EFFORTS ARE UNDERWAY TO DEVLP ALTERNATIVE FUNDNG RESOURCES TO ALLOW FOR CONTINUING TESTING OF THE EXPERIMNTL RESULTS OBTAINED THUS FAR.AN ECON ANALYSIS OF THE RESULTS & AN ANALYSIS OF THE SOILS WILL BE USED TO ASSESS PROBABILITY OF EARLY ADOPTION OF THE DEVLPD TECHNOLOGY. PROJECT"S PRIMARY BENEFICIARIES ARE THE POPULATIONS OF TARGETED LDC"S WITH POTENTIALLY INCREASED FOOD PRODUCTION.
