Abstract
The program is designed to provide age-appropriate information to young people, helping them make informed decisions about their lives. The series is based on the Life Skills or Life Orientation curriculum and covers Comprehensive Sexuality Education topics. The program follows the story of Sipho, a 14-year-old boy in grade 8, who lives with his grandmother, sister, and younger brother. Sipho's class is led by Ms. Moloi, who creates a safe and fun learning environment. The class is initially noisy, but Ms. Moloi patiently waits for the learners to settle down before introducing the topic of STIs. Ms. Moloi explains that STIs are sexually transmitted infections and lists eight common STIs on the board, including Human Papillomavirus (HPV), Herpes Simplex 2 (HSV2), and Chlamydia. She emphasizes the importance of knowing about each STI to protect oneself and provides information about the symptoms, causes, and treatments of each infection. Sipho asks a question about the prevalence of HIV in South Africa, and Ms. Moloi responds by stating that the prevalence of HIV is 17% in the country, with 25% of school-aged girls and 4% of school-aged boys infected. Sipho notices that more girls are infected than boys and asks why this is the case. Ms. Moloi encourages Sipho to think critically about the statistics and invites his classmate Zweli to provide an answer. The program aims to educate young people about STIs, HIV, and AIDS, providing them with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about their lives. By addressing sensitive topics in a safe and supportive environment, the program aims to empower young people to take control of their health and well-being. The program is part of a larger initiative to provide comprehensive sexuality education to young people in South Africa. The initiative is supported by the American people through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and is implemented by the Education Development Center (EDC). The program is designed to be part of a series of radio programs that address everyday problems faced by adolescents in South Africa. The program's objective is to provide young people with accurate and age-appropriate information about STIs, HIV, and AIDS, as well as to promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
