USAID. MISSION TO ITALY
Project to provide postgraduate U.S.
1984
Abstract
training in fields related to economic and social development to university researchers from public and private universities in southern Italy. A U.S. contractor will implement the program in conjunction with the Fulbright Commission in Italy. Fellowships for postgraduate research/study programs at U.S. universities will be awarded to up to 73 university researchers (approximately equivalent to assistant professors in the United States). The one-year programs in development fields such as economics, business, science and technology, health, and agriculture will include up to 3 months of English-language instruction. The contractor will establish criteria for selection of candidates and will enroll participants in appropriate U.S. academic/research programs. The Italy Fulbright Commission will be subcontracted to coordinate activities in Italy, including program promotion and candidate screening, selection, counseling, and orientation. The Government of Italy will continue the full salary and benefits of program participants; participants or their universitites will pay their airfare costs. It is expected that closer political and cultural ties between the United States and Italy as well as enhanced economic development in southern Italy will be long-range results of the project.
