USAID. MISSION TO SRI LANKA
Program to increase employment opportunities and incomes of the un- and underemployed in Sri Lanka by facilitating the expansion of small and medium businesses and microenterprises.
1996

Abstract
The program, which consolidates the Mission"s existing agribusiness and private sector development projects as well as two new activities under the Economic Growth Strategic Objective (SO), will aim at achieving four strategic outcomes: (1) increased private sector participation in the economy; (2) adoption of improved technologies by Sri Lanka"s private enterprises; (3) more accessible and effective financial markets; and (4) increased food security. Activities will be organized under three major components. (1) A Technology and Business Assistance (TBAC) component will promote the transfer of technologies and the development of economic infrastructure by the private sector through two existing activities: Technology Initiative for the Private Sector, TIPS, (3830108) and Promotion of Private Infrastructure, PPI, (3830118). (2) An Agriculture and Microenterprise Development component (AMDC) will broaden the base of economic development by promoting jobs, income growth, and entrepreneurship in rural areas and among small farmers through the existing activity -- Agro-Enterprises (AgEnt) and through a new activity -- MESA (Microenterprise Support Activity). (3) An Economic Reform Component (ERC) will support improved economic policies in four key areas: privatization, financial markets, trade and industry, and food and agriculture. Additional activities that may enhance the prospects of attaining the aforesaid strategic outcomes may also be funded. Overall implementation responsibility will rest with the Core SO I team, which will organize the various program outcomes into one or more "Results Packages."
