Abstract
The overall implementation status stands at 77%, with the initial work plan covering five quarters of implementation. The coming quarter will be the final quarter for the agreed activities. TB IC training and establishment of TB IC committees in 15 TB CARE I project sites were conducted, along with comprehensive training of clinical and support staff at the University College Hospital (UCH) on MDR TB. The National TB/HIV Working Group meeting was held on January 27, 2012, in Abuja, identifying seven priority areas and targets for TB/HIV collaborative activities in 2012. A TOT training was conducted with 21 participants on TB/HIV collaborative activities to scale up training at the state level, and 36 staff were trained on AFB microscopy and HIV rapid testing. The renovation of 24 DOTS centers and 15 AFB microscopy labs was completed during the quarter. Technical Area 3, Infection Control, achieved 88% completion, with 50 facilities implementing infection control measures. Technical Area 4, PMDT, achieved 85% completion, with 150 facilities implementing PMDT activities. Technical Area 5, TB/HIV, achieved 57% completion, with 288 facilities providing TB/HIV services. The major challenge faced during the quarter was security issues in most parts of the country, limiting access for implementation of activities. The Netherlands Leprosy Relief and The Leprosy Mission Nigeria supported the states in the Northern part of the country where security challenges remain largest. In the TB/HIV Technical Area, the proportion of registered TB patients tested for HIV was 85.2%, with 82% of TB patients counseled for HIV. The number of dually infected patients receiving CPT was 46%, and the number of dually infected patients on ART was 39.5%. A total of 13,359 individuals received C and T for HIV and received their test results during the quarter. The TB CARE I-Nigeria (COP) Year 1 Quarterly Report highlights the progress made in the implementation of the work plan, with significant achievements in TB IC training, establishment of TB IC committees, and renovation of DOTS centers and AFB microscopy labs. However, security issues and challenges in implementing activities remain a major concern. The report also highlights the progress made in the TB/HIV Technical Area, with significant achievements in the proportion of registered TB patients tested for HIV, the number of dually infected patients receiving CPT, and the number of dually infected patients on ART. However, challenges remain in implementing activities, particularly in the Northern part of the country. The overall implementation status stands at 77%, with the coming quarter being the final quarter for the agreed activities. The report highlights the need to accelerate the implementation of pending activities and overcome the challenges faced during the quarter. In the Health Systems Strengthening Technical Area, the proportion of sites reporting valid TB/HIV data was 80%, with 75 microscopes and 5 GeneXpert machines procured. The report highlights the need to improve the quality of TB/HIV data and overcome the challenges faced in implementing activities.
