Abstract
The plan of the paper is to first present in sectionII the major theoretical developments relating to the concept of technical change. SectionIII will be concerned with the various techniques that have been employed to measure productivity growth. In sectionIV, attention is turned to identifying the sources of technical change in agriculture. SectionV is devoted mainly to a survey of the literature that has attempted to measure the costs and return to agricultural research and extension. SectionVI is concerned with the diffusion of technology among farms, among regions, and among countries. In sectionVII the authors consider the welfare implications of technical change in agriculture including both its output increasing and distributional effects.
