Abstract
In an attempt to define technology transfer, an initial section discusses different meanings of technology (as physical hardware and cognitional software); examines various sources of technology and the role of management practices in technology transfer; and provides a model for analyzing the contexts in which technology transfer can occur. Part two of the study discusses how user firm characteristics affect technology transfer. Emphasis is laid on the need for managerial skills (especially planning), a commitment to management development, and experience in acquiring new technology. The basic phases of the decisionmaking process involved in adopting new technology are outlined, and issues involved in analyzing user firm needs for both hard and soft technology are exemplified in various International Executive Service Corps (IESC) consulting projects.
