Abstract
The project began in late 2005 and was implemented over a six-year period. At the start of the project, Ukrainian women were more likely to rely on abortion than their European counterparts, while their use of modern contraception was low compared to Western Europe and the world as a whole. The project's goal was to reduce the number of abortions and unintended pregnancies by improving the provision of and access to quality reproductive health and family planning services. To achieve this goal, the project implemented several key interventions, including improving service provider skills and behavior related to reproductive health and family planning, increasing client knowledge, attitudes, and use of appropriate reproductive health and family planning services and products, and increasing the availability, accessibility, and affordability of contraceptives. The project also focused on improving the capacity and commitment of the public and private sectors to support policies and systems for improved reproductive health. This included working with the Ministry of Health to establish a network of family planning centers and training health care providers on modern family planning methods. The project's impact was significant, with a 27% increase in the use of modern contraceptives among married women, a 60% decrease in the abortion rate, and a 40% decrease in the child abandonment rate. The project also improved the availability and accessibility of contraceptives, with a 50% increase in the number of contraceptive methods available in the country. The project's success was due in part to its focus on improving the capacity and commitment of the public and private sectors to support policies and systems for improved reproductive health. The project worked closely with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders to establish a strong foundation for reproductive health services in Ukraine. The project's impact was also due to its focus on improving the skills and knowledge of health care providers. The project provided training and technical assistance to health care providers on modern family planning methods, including the use of condoms, intrauterine devices, and oral contraceptives. The project's results were measured through a variety of indicators, including the use of modern contraceptives, the abortion rate, and the child abandonment rate. The project's monitoring and evaluation system was designed to track progress towards its goals and to identify areas for improvement. The project's success has had a lasting impact on the reproductive health landscape in Ukraine. The project's focus on improving the capacity and commitment of the public and private sectors to support policies and systems for improved reproductive health has helped to establish a strong foundation for reproductive health services in the country. The project's impact on the use of modern contraceptives and the reduction of unintended pregnancies has also had a significant impact on the health and well-being of women and families in Ukraine. The project's results have also been recognized internationally, with the project receiving several awards and recognition for its work in improving reproductive health in Ukraine. The project's success has also been recognized by the Ukrainian government, which has continued to support the project's goals and objectives.
