TRADENET is an electronic communications network which was developed to enable researchers and policy makers in eastern and southern Africa who are working on issues related to crossborder trade and food security to exchange working papers, analyses, databases, etc.

Abstract
TRADENET is based on the Southern Africa Food Information Resources and Exchange Network (SAFIRE), which was established to enhance donor countries" response to the 1992 drought. TRADENET is actually a "virtual network," which gives the appearance of everyone being connected in the same way, while in reality there will be a variety of connections. It incorporates both INTERNET and Fidonet linkages. This user"s guide provides an overview of the Fidonet technology and of the Intermail software utilized by TRADENET, as well as instructions (with screen illustrations) on sending and receiving messages, managing mail, and troubleshooting.
