Abstract
The project aims to improve vegetable production and consumption in Mali, particularly in the Sikasso region. The project is funded by the USAID Feed the Future (FtF) initiative, with award number AID-BFS-IO-12-00004. The project's activities focus on promoting improved vegetable production technologies, including the regeneration of improved technologies in vegetable production and seed production of elite AVRDC varieties. The project also extends the benefits and lessons to beneficiaries in other FtF communities in the Sikasso region, including training farmers in new technologies of vegetable production. Additionally, the project monitors seed production fields in demonstration sites and supervises the activities of seed companies engaged in vegetable seed production. The project has achieved significant results, including the successful harvesting of tomato seeds by producers, who were enthusiastic about extracting good quality seed using the technologies learned during training sessions. The project has also enabled women to extract more tomato juice during the peak tomato production season, which can be stored and used for up to six months. The project's upcoming activities include extending the project benefits and lessons to beneficiaries in other FtF communities in the Sikasso region, monitoring the incidence and severity of disease and pest on vegetable plants, and monitoring seed production fields in demonstration sites. The project will also hold an international field day on March 17, 2014, at the Sokourani site in the district of Sikasso, which will involve direct and indirect collaborators, including local administrative authorities, government agricultural and health services, partners, NGOs, USAID-Mali, and media. The project's geographic focus is on the Sikasso region in Mali, with a particular emphasis on the districts of Bougouni and Kadiolo. The project's timeframes are not explicitly stated, but the report covers the period from February 1-28, 2014, and mentions upcoming activities and events for the forthcoming reporting period. The project's recommendations are not explicitly stated, but the report highlights the importance of vegetable production, marketing, and consumption for the rural population in Mali.
