Abstract
The Planning for Climate Adaptation Program in the Dominican Republic is a USAID-funded initiative. The program aims to support local governments in developing climate-resilient plans and policies. The program focuses on three key components: climate vulnerability assessments, territorial diagnostics, and municipal land use planning. Climate vulnerability assessments are being conducted in four cities: Las Terrenas, Distrito Nacional, Santiago, and San Pedro de Macoris. The assessments identify areas vulnerable to climate change and provide recommendations for adaptation and mitigation measures. Territorial diagnostics are being conducted in the four cities to identify areas for improvement in land use planning and climate change adaptation. The diagnostics provide a comprehensive analysis of the cities' current land use patterns, climate change impacts, and adaptation needs. Municipal land use planning is a key component of the program. The program supports local governments in developing land use plans that incorporate climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction measures. The plans aim to improve the cities' resilience to climate change and reduce the impacts of climate-related disasters. The program has made significant progress in the past quarter. The new mayor of Las Terrenas has committed to the program and the first draft of the territorial analysis is being reviewed by the technical team. The National Office for Meteorology (ONAMET) has provided climate data to support the program's climate vulnerability assessments. The program has also made progress in San Pedro de Macoris. The city council has passed Resolution #21, recognizing the importance of integrating land use planning, climate change adaptation, and disaster risk reduction in the municipal area. The resolution prioritizes the development of a Municipal Land Use Plan that defines the city's regional context and incorporates climate change adaptation measures. The program has also made progress in Santiago. The new mayor has verbally committed to the program and a workflow strategy is being developed to guarantee the completion of the land use plan.
