Abstract
The training aims to equip librarians with essential skills to promote and manage library collections effectively. Community librarians learn the importance of cataloguing library books to track the number and availability of books. This enables community members to borrow books and know when to expect them back, reducing losses. Organizing books according to genre and subject is also a crucial aspect of library management. Many communities hosting a library from USAID previously had limited access to reading materials, and a culture of reading was lacking. To build and enhance this culture, community members need books that interest and excite them. Librarians learn how to classify books and organize shelves accordingly, making it easier for readers to choose a book of their choice. Another key role of librarians is to encourage community members and help them understand that the library is for everyone. Parents, in particular, should be encouraged to bring their children to the library. This not only benefits the young child but also helps the adult and the community as a whole. Librarians learn how to promote the library and its services to the community, ensuring that everyone knows about the library and its resources. Following the training, librarians return to their districts equipped with the necessary skills to manage and promote their libraries. In Kajongo sector, for example, Maurice, a librarian, organized a launching event to introduce over 800 new titles from USAID to his library's collection. The event was attended by national and district level government officials, students, and community members. Students received books as prizes for participating in a reading competition, and other children and community members performed a play about the importance of parents promoting education and literacy for their children. The training program has a significant impact on the communities, as community libraries are sure to thrive in the hands of librarians equipped with essential skills. The program aims to promote a culture of reading and literacy in Rwanda, and its success depends on the effective management and promotion of library collections by community librarians.
