Abstract
Congress on A.I.D."s progress during the UN Decade for Women (1974-85) in designing and implementing women in development (WID) projects in five key sectors - agriculture, employment and income generation, education and training, energy and natural resources, and water, health, and sanitation. Lessons learned are: (1) agricultural assistance projects must reach women if they are to achieve their objectives of increasing agricultural production and rural income; (2) women are turning increasingly to self-generated employment in the informal sector as other employment opportunities remain extremely limited; (3) lack of educational opportunities reduces women"s social and economic options, as well as the potential socioeconomic returns of developing countries" investments in education; (4) in most developing countries, women and girls are responsible for household energy needs; and (5) more effort is needed to include women in development strategies to improve health, raise nutritional levels, and control their own fertility. Tables providing statistical data on A.I.D."s WID projects for FY"s 1982-86 overall and by region, country, and Bureau are appended.
