Abstract
The program is managed by Abt Associates, Inc. in collaboration with several partner organizations. The project is funded by the United States Agency for International Development, under contract GHH-I-00-00003. The program's objective is to strengthen the health system in Zambia by improving the quality of care and increasing access to health services. The program focuses on four key areas: Task One: Support for the Central Ministry, Task Two: Support to the Provinces and Districts, Task Three: Improve Community Involvement, and Task Four: Improve Health Information Systems. Task One: Support for the Central Ministry focuses on providing technical assistance to the Ministry of Health to improve the management of the health system. This includes support for the development of a human resources information system, implementation and rollout of a patient management program, and other human resources for health activities. Task Two: Support to the Provinces and Districts focuses on providing technical assistance to the provinces and districts to improve the quality of care and increase access to health services. This includes support for clinical care and quality improvement, management specialists, and malaria control activities. Task Three: Improve Community Involvement focuses on improving community involvement in the health system. This includes training of neighborhood health committees, supervision of neighborhood health committees, and training of safe motherhood action group trainers. The program also focuses on improving health information systems, including the development of a health information system, support to data quality assessments, and capacity building in management functions. The program has made significant progress in improving the quality of care and increasing access to health services in Zambia. The program has also improved the management of the health system, including the development of a human resources information system and the implementation and rollout of a patient management program. The program has also made significant progress in improving community involvement in the health system, including the training of neighborhood health committees and the supervision of neighborhood health committees. The program has also made significant progress in improving health information systems, including the development of a health information system and support to data quality assessments. The program has also made significant progress in malaria control activities, including the implementation of indoor residual spraying, the review of indoor residual spraying training modules, and the disposal of actellic bottles.
