Abstract
The article discusses a research project conducted in Samaná Province, Dominican Republic, which aimed to develop a solid waste management system and promote social and behavior change among households. The project used a methodology called Trials of Improved Practices (TIPs), which combines anthropology and market research to understand and influence people's behavior. The research found that most people felt empowered by segregating waste, and the results informed the design of a solid waste management system that responds to households' needs and demands their support. The project was a partnership between local environmental NGOs, applied anthropology, and practicing anthropology.
