USAID WE3 Factsheet: Women's Economic Empowerment in Global Solid Waste Management and Recycling

It highlights the importance of addressing the gender dimensions of solid waste management, and recycling, particularly in the informal sector where women are present in large numbers. The factsheet provides an overview of the private sector, and governments' efforts to address the issue of ocean plastic pollution and its impact on women's economic empowerment. It also presents findings and recommendations based on a WE3 gender analysis of the sector, including the need to change perceptions of solid waste management and recycling as masculine work, increase access to credit and market information for female waste pickers and recyclers, and strengthen awareness of gender-based violence throughout the value chain.
