Abstract
The article emphasizes the importance of optimal complementary feeding practices in preventing micronutrient deficiencies, stunting, overweight, and obesity in infants and young children. It presents the current situation in Kenya, where despite impressive gains in exclusive breastfeeding, progress in complementary feeding has been slow, and the country has failed to meet targets. The article describes the key actions taken by the Kenya Ministry of Health to improve complementary feeding, including the development of 23 complementary feeding recipes and the integration of cooking demonstrations and key hygiene actions into the Baby Friendly Community Initiative platform. The article concludes by highlighting the need for future programming to consider context-specific counseling messages, strengthen production and use of local foods, and include complementary indicators in routine health monitoring systems to track progress.
