Abstract
The article presents a systematic review of 48 studies from 14 countries, identifying 16 barriers to exclusive breast-feeding. The review highlights the importance of improving counseling skills of health workers, increasing community support for breast-feeding, and addressing legislation and regulations on marketing of breast-milk substitutes, paid maternity leave, and breast-feeding breaks for working mothers. The article aims to inform programmatic implications for improving exclusive breast-feeding rates, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
