John Burns, Andy Catley and Hussein Mahmoud · 2021

Abstract
It presents the results of a participatory analysis of the causes and seasonality of malnutrition in children and mothers in North Horr and Loiyangalani wards in Marsabit County, Kenya. The report is part of the Nawiri project, which aims to sustainably reduce levels of persistent acute malnutrition in Kenya's arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs). The analysis involved ethnographic reviews, participatory epidemiology methods, and fieldwork in 14 communities in North Horr and 16 communities in Loiyangalani. The report highlights the key findings, including the seasonal patterns of malnutrition, the importance of livestock products, income, and human disease, as well as gender issues and cultural norms that contribute to malnutrition. The report also presents the proposed interventions to address malnutrition, which focus on income generation, livelihoods support, and access to inputs and capital.
