Abstract
The books, provided through the International Book Bank, include children's storybooks, reference materials for teachers, and novels and nonfiction books for recreational reading. This donation is part of the national Rwanda Reads Initiative, aimed at promoting a culture of reading in Rwanda. The College of Education is committed to improving the quality of education through reading promotion. Dr. Faustin Habineza, head of primary education and TTC coordinator at CoE, stated that the college is dedicated to promoting reading to enhance educational outcomes. The donated books will be used by TTCs, which are implementing a new curriculum that emphasizes the use of story in teaching reading and language methods. TTC tutors will use the new storybooks to model effective teaching practices for their students, who will practice these skills during their student-teaching at primary schools. The donated books will also benefit TTC students and tutors, providing them with reference and recreational reading materials. The ultimate goal is for TTC students to develop a culture of reading, which they can then share with primary students and other teachers when they become educators. Jean Pierre Mugiraneza, an assistant lecturer at CoE, noted that a lack of reading materials and a reading culture is a significant challenge in Rwandan schools. The new shipment of books is expected to address this issue. The L3 Initiative is a collaborative effort between the Education Development Center (EDC), the Rwanda Education Board, the University of Rwanda's College of Education, and other international partners, including Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO), Concern Worldwide, International Education Exchange, the Peace Corps, and Never Again Rwanda. The initiative is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the foreign assistance agency of the United States government. The ceremony for the book presentation will be held at the CoE on Friday, with representatives from the CoE, USAID, and the L3 Initiative, as well as a TTC principal, making remarks. Refreshments will be served, and there will be time for discussion. The event marks a significant milestone in the L3 Initiative's efforts to promote literacy and education in Rwanda.
