Abstract
Management-oriented rather than technical in nature, the manual is intended for use by those concerned with A&RE project design, implementation, and evaluation, as well as by those involved more marginally in such projects. Chapter 1 sketches the major issues which suggest that A&RE projects have considerable potential to promote meaningful development; chapters 2 and 3 elaborate these issues in greater detail. Chapters 4 through 7 deal with the approaches and techniques useful for project design - from the identification of participating groups to the cost-benefit analysis of project components and overall project design. Chapter 8 presents a typology of the kinds of data used in analyzing A&RE projects and sets out optional approaches to collecting these data. Chapter 9 discusses the critical issues of implementing, monitoring, and evaluating A&RE projects, while chapter 10 summarizes the volume"s major themes. Included are 44 tables and a bibliography which lists the works cited in the footnotes, as well as useful supplemental works.
