Abstract
to strengthen the Instituto Agropecuario Salesiano Carlos Pfannl (IAS) in Paraguay by upgrading the school"s faculty, commercial agricultural enterprises, and management. The educational component will improve IAS" capacity in curriculum planning and development. Faculty will attend a 100- hour in-country training course designed by the Inter-American Institute for Agricultural Cooperation and participate in exchanges with other Salesian agricultural schools to learn improved teaching approaches. Faculty salaries will be augmented so IAS can maintain a core of full-time permanent staff. In addition, IAS will establish a data bank of employment and training opportunities for alumni. Finally, educational materials and equipment will be procured. The agro-enterprise component will upgrade the school"s ranching, dairy, and poultry operations. IAS will demonstrate range management techniques that permit greater livestock carrying capacities. Existing dairy facilities will be upgraded to increase quality and quantity. Poultry operations will be expanded and improved. The grant will also support other income- generating activities involving crop production, irrigation trials, and agroforestry. TA will be provided and new positions created to manage the increased responsibilities. Equipment to support the farming and ranching operations will be provided. The grant will provide TA and training in administration, accounting, and management to improve IAS cost-effectiveness. A new accounting and information system will be implemented. A microcomputer will be installed, and an IAS organizational chart developed.
