Grant is provided under the Cooperative Grants to PVO"s Project (9380192) to Credit Union National Association (CUNA) to continue its efforts to strengthen (1) the international credit union system, through the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU); and (2) the African credit union system, through the African Confederation of Cooperative Savings and Credit Associations (ACCOSCA).
1989

Abstract
WOCCU will undertake three major activities. (1) At least six long-term development projects will be initiated, with preference given primarily to Africa and secondarily to Asia. WOCCU will also explore opportunities in the areas of microenterprise development, food aid resources, and debt conversion. (2) Training and TA will be WOCCU"s second focus. WOCCU will standardize and coordinate its training services by establishing an International Credit Union Institute. It will also provide on-site technical consultations lasting 5-7 days to member organizations in 20 developing countries, as well as short-term TA where needed. (3) In the area of information services, WOCCU will produce six technical services packages (print/audiovisual materials on specific credit union issues), continue its library and information dissemination activities, and upgrade its research and analysis capacities. The ACCOSCA activity will be implemented at both the regional and the country level. At the regional level, the grant will strengthen ACCOSCA institutionally, primarily by expanding its automated information systems and enhancing its training, TA, and other credit union support functions. At the country level, ACCOSCA will help national associations develop credit union movements, implement development projects, and develop central finance systems and credit union training programs. ACCOSCA will also train national association members; develop a model in-country statistical and information system; and develop model credit union legislative guidelines for each participating country.
