Grant is provided under the Strengthening Democratic Institutions Project to Fundacion para el Desarrollo Institucional de Guatemala (Fundacion DIG) to promote understanding of the major social, political, and economic problems facing Guatemala by supporting four courses for opinionmakers, to be presented by the Centro de Estudios Estrategicos para la Estabilidad (ESTNA).

Abstract
Each year from 1992 to 1995, ESTNA will offer an 8-month, 92-session course to some 65 academic, religious, social, political, military, and business leaders. The course methodology will include contracted national and international speakers (both academics and practitioners), question and answer periods, and work sessions. Every effort will be made to facilitate dialogue among participants from different sectors and to increase women"s participation to at least 20% by the 1995 course. ESTNA will also make the course proceedings available to the general public on video tape and will produce a collection of scholarly papers. In addition, ESTNA will begin no later than 1993 to provide facility, technical, and financial assistance to help the ESTNA graduate association implement follow-on activities, and will establish a regional center in the Guatemalan highlands by 1994 to conduct a course for indigenous participants.
