Grant is provided to the Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA) to help 500 needy, internally displaced families (2,500 people) in Lebanon to return to their original homes in 25 villages.
1993

Abstract
CNEWA, working with the Pontifical Mission for Palestine (PMP), will repair individually owned housing to the point at which it can be reoccupied by displaced families; provide resettled families with basic household goods and temporary living expenses until they are able to resume earning income; and reconstruct village infrastructure, including water, sewage, and electricity systems, communal facilities (e.g., schools and health facilities), agricultural roads, and retaining walls. In addition, PMP, in cooperation with national and local authorities, traditional leaders, and NGOs, will seek to foster a spirit of reconciliation and create or re-establish community institutions. The project may emphasize the Druze-dominated areas where an estimated 175,000 persons, mainly Maronite and Greek Orthodox, left in 1983 following withdrawal of Israeli forces. PMP has tentatively identified villages in the Baabda, Chouf, Upper Metn, and Aley areas.
