AID grant no. 521-0182-G-SS-5035-00 with Conch Ministeries for establishing a pilot project of conch management in the Bay of Ft. Liberte

PVO, to re-establish the conch population in the Bay of Fort Liberte as a first step in reversing the depletion of Haiti"s conch resources. CM will place hatchery-raised and locally caught juvenile Queen conchs (Strombus gigas) in shallow water enclosures in the Bay until they reach 5 cm in length, and, at that time, will tag and set the conchs in shallow protected areas where their growth, movement, and survival will be monitored. CM will also evaluate the ability of local fishermen to farm (rather than exploit) conchs by maintaining conch nurseries and conducting a conch release and monitoring program.
