Grant is provided to the World Bank/Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) to assist the Vavilov Institute of Plant Industry in initiating a confined field testing of the Vaccinia Virus Double Recombinant Vaccine for Rinderpest (VVDRVR) in Kenya.
1993

Abstract
Rinderpest is the single most important disease of livestock in developing countries of Africa and Asia. This quarantine field test will gather information over a one year period on the efficacy and safety of VVDRVR for vaccination against rinderpest. Properly used, this vaccine may rid the world of rinderpest within a decade. In the current trial, VVDRVR will be administered to cattle by intradermal injection and scarification in a P3 isolation facility. Cattle will be kept under strict quarantine for 30 days after vaccination and then transferred to a fenced pasture. Immunological and challenge studies will be conducted in a P3 facility for 1 year. After completion of the challenge study, the animals will be euthanized and their carcasses incinerated.
