Grant is provided to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), an Historically Black College and University (HBCU), for a research program to improve the management practices of small-scale food crop farmers (those who manage under 5 ha of land) in the South West Province of Cameroon.

Abstract
UMES will: (1) document the management practices on 500 small farms; (2) describe the management functions of farm managers and construct their management intensity indexes; (3) determine the impact of management (worker and allocative effects) on small-scale food crop farm productivity; and (4) develop a computer-based information and decision making support system for farmers, along with guidelines for improving the contribution of management on small farms. Finally, UMES will organize training workshops at the Ekona Research Center for small-scale food crop farmers in farm management, technology adoption, and competitiveness in international agricultural trade.
