USAID. MISSION TO PERU
OPG to CARE to undertake a community health program in several marginal urban areas of Arequipa, Peru.
1985

Abstract
CARE will implement the project in conjunction with CARITAS and the Ministry of Health. The project will: reorient health posts from a focus on curative services to include health education and preventive health care; promote awareness and use of child health practices including immunization programs, breastfeeding, and oral rehydration therapy; and increase community health and nutrition activities, including planting of vegetable gardens, establishing community kitchens, starting support groups for TB patients, and constructing latrines. CARE will train health workers at MOH health centers and posts and CARITAS-sponsored child feeding stations in child survival techniques based upon the UNICEF concept of "GOBI" -- growth monitoring, oral rehydration therapy, breastfeeding and weaning, and immunization. CARE will also provide training to traditional birth attendants. Amendment of 6/25/86 includes the Agriculture Faculty of the University of Peru as an implementing organization and describes the following numerical targets: 7,500 vaccinations; 20,000 oral rehydration solution (ORS) packets distributed and/or mothers trained to make ORS at home; 4,000 mothers in health education courses; 375 vegetable gardens; 75 small animal production projects; 150 latrines constructed; 4 TB clubs formed; and 20 MOH auxiliary nurses and 20 community volunteers trained.
