Grant is provided under the Innovative Scientific Research Project (9365542) to Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (UPCH) in Lima, Peru, for a research project entitled "Proteolytic Enzymes: Evaluation as Purified Antigens in Diagnosis of Fascioliasis in Peru."
1987

Abstract
The research will test the use of sophisticated molecular biology and genetic engineering techniques in the diagnosis of Fasciola hepatica, a parasite which can damage the liver and cause death in both humans and domestic animals. It will also provide important experience to Peruvian investigators in the use of recombinant DNA technology, as well as in antigen capture techniques, and in the use of purified antigens for serodiagnosis of helminthic (worm) diseases. Currently, fascioliasis cannot be detected until 3 months after the worms first enter the host body, making effective control of the disease impossible. UPCH will conduct the project in collaboration with Baylor College.
