Abstract
The U.S. National Academy of Sciences will implement the subproject. Activities will include: (1) analysis of existing research on fertility, and development of an agenda for future research; (2) indepth investigation of the effects on fertility of three important variables, such as education, health, and family planning programs; (3) investigation of measurement problems, especially the linking of macro and micro data through exploratory data analysis; (4) case studies of conditions of fertility change in about ten countries, including the measurement of relationships; and (5) consideration of the proximate determinants of fertility, including such variables as age at marriage, breastfeeding, contraceptive availability, and abortion.
