Abstract
The program aimed to bolster young people's resilience against terrorist recruitment efforts by identifying employment opportunities and providing technical training. The initiative focused on cell phone repair as a promising income-generating activity, given the high demand for such services in the region. Following previous terrorist attacks, many qualified cell phone repair technicians fled the area, creating a gap in the market. The BFRP program identified this opportunity and provided training for 20 vulnerable youth, including four young women. The training focused on innovative techniques that allowed the new technicians to use tool kits to repair a variety of different phone brands. Participants received their own toolkits consisting of a multimeter, magnifying glasses, soldering irons, and screwdrivers to help them start businesses in their home districts. The training had a significant impact on the participants' incomes, with most experiencing a three- to four-fold increase compared to what they earned before the training. One of the youth participants reported earning around XOF 20,000 (about $37) each market day, repairing an average of 20 phones per week. Clients appreciated the discussions he led on peace and stability when they stopped at his stall, and he credited the training with tripling his income. The initiative not only provided young people with more reliable sources of income but also raised awareness among their peers about the issues facing their communities. The participants, who are now key actors in the local economy, will serve as role models in engaging young people to mitigate the effects of violence and insecurity. By providing alternative income sources and promoting peace and stability, the BFRP program contributed to the region's economic development and security. The program's success demonstrates the effectiveness of providing technical training and support to vulnerable youth in the Nord Region. By empowering young people with skills and knowledge, the BFRP program helped to reduce their vulnerability to terrorist recruitment efforts and promoted economic growth in the region. The initiative's focus on cell phone repair as a viable income-generating activity highlights the importance of identifying and addressing the needs of local communities in order to promote sustainable development and security.
