Abstract
The initiative, implemented by a consortium of organizations including the Federation of Indigenous Organizations of Ecuador (FEINCE) and the Conservation Strategy Fund (CSF), aimed to promote biodiversity conservation through the implementation of sustainable productive activities in indigenous communities. The initiative focused on three communities: Callería, Patria Nueva, and Nuevo Saposoa, located in the Ucayali region. The main objective was to promote economic development through the implementation of activities such as aguaje management in Patria Nueva and cocha management in Nuevo Saposoa and Callería. The initiative also aimed to establish groups of work in each community, which would be responsible for implementing the activities and managing the products. The identification of areas of work and the formation of groups of work were carried out through participatory workshops with the community members. In Callería, the activity to be executed was the management of cochas, with a focus on the Plátano cocha and Eva cocha. In Patria Nueva, the activity was the management of aguaje, with a focus on an area of 93 hectares located between the Blanco and Negro quebradas. In Nuevo Saposoa, the activity was also the management of cochas, with a focus on the Cocha de Saposoa. The groups of work were formed through the election of members by the community participants. In Callería, the group was called Comité TSONKIRO, with 13 members. In Patria Nueva, the group was called Comité BINON COSHIATI, with 17 members. In Nuevo Saposoa, the group was called Asociación WAME CAIACAI JONIBO “AWACAJ”, with 14 members. The initiative aimed to promote the commercialization of the products generated by the communities, with the goal of increasing their income and improving their quality of life. The establishment of the groups of work and the identification of areas of work were crucial steps in achieving this goal.
