Abstract
The Mahidol University will implement the project under the supervision of the Governing Body of the ASEAN Scholarship Program. Under this 2-year project, a total of 226 scholarships will be awarded to train 274 doctors, scientists, and medical technicians in programs conducted by Mahidol University (in Thailand), the University of Indonesia, and the University of the Philippines and the Institute for Medical Research (in Malaysia). The approximate allocation of scholarships per country will be: 29+ for Indonesia; 17+ for Malaysia; 27+ for the Philippines; 9+ for Singapore; and 25+ for Thailand. The training will consist of short-term programs in applied tropical medicine and public health skills relevant to the prevention and care of regional health problems. Training at Mahidol University will include a 6-month diploma program in tropical medicine and hygiene for 72 trainees; a 10-month Master of Public Health (MPH) program in public health, with a major in urban health, for 20 trainees; a 2-year M.S. program in tropical medicine for 24 trainees; and a 1-year M.S. program in clinical tropical medicine for eight trainees. At the University of Indonesia, applied nutrition will be the subject of a 10-month diploma program for 36 trainees and a 1-year M.S. program for 8 trainees. University of the Philippines training includes a 1-year MPH program for 20 trainees; a 10-month M.S. program in occupational health for 12 trainees; and a 2-year M.S. program in public health (majors in medical microbiology, medical parasitology or public health nutrition) program for 14 trainees. Training at the Institute for Medical Research will consist of a 6-month diploma program in applied parasitology and entomology for 32 trainees and a 6-month diploma program in medical microbiology for 28 trainees. Amendment of 6/86 provides continued funding of scholarships for the 1986-87 academic year to avoid a disruption of current training activities and to permit a smooth transition to the new institutional development effort to be implemented during the project"s planned second phase.
