Abstract
The Directorate General for Higher Education of the Department of Education will implement the project with long-term USAID technical assistance. An interdisciplinary graduate program in the field of energy technology will be developed at the Technical University of Bandung (ITB). To this end, a graduate energy program curriculum and course syllabi will be developed, along with instructional and reference materials sufficient to begin the program. By the project"s third year, at least ten students will be enrolled in the new ITB program. To provide a qualified staff for the program, team members of the existing Energy Cluster (EC), a group of professors specializing in the energy field who reside at ITB, will be upgraded by long- and short-term training. Five EC members will attend workshops abroad and five will receive academic training at a U.S. institution that operates an energy center. Study program will be interdisciplinary in nature, but will include specializations such as solar energy, coal, geothermal, and alternative sources of liquid fuels. Research conducted by EC members in training will focus on practical Indonesian energy problems to prepare them to teach, conduct and publish research, and guide the research of others at ITB. ITB will henceforth be responsible for providing future professional training to those working in the energy field. Short-term workshops and M.S. degree training will be provided to fifteen other professionals to prepare them to work at energy centers proposed by the National Technical Committee on Energy Resources to conduct research on energy issues so as to support effective long-range GOI decisionmaking on energy matters. In addition, 10 other professionals will receive M.S. training in the U.S. for future assignation in energy organizations or centers.
