USAID. BUR. FOR ASIA AND PRIVATE ENTERPRISE
Project to establish/strengthen educational links between the United States and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), particularly in areas needed for private sector growth, such as engineering, science, business, and management.
1991

Abstract
The project will establish: (1) educational partnerships between U.S. and ASEAN institutions; (2) U.S. internships and outreach programs for ASEAN participants; and (3) regional and U.S. private sector training programs. The project will develop and strengthen educational partnerships between U.S. and ASEAN institutions in the areas of science, engineering, business, and management. Activities will include: joint faculty research, faculty exchanges, scholarships and student exchanges, and seminars and workshops. The project"s target is to establish 10-15 such partnerships. Outreach will consist of identifying ASEAN students studying in the United States and providing them with productive contacts and ties to the U.S. Government and the U.S. private sector. The outreach programs are expected to reach over 100,000 ASEAN students in the United States and involve 20,000 of them in on- campus activities. Additionally, 5,000 students are expected to participate in private sector internships and cooperative education programs. A.I.D. missions in the ASEAN region will expand their support of private sector training. Specifically, A.I.D. will encourage the training of 2,500 Asian private sector employees in their countries and help place 500 of those employees in short-term courses in the United States. The project will be implemented initially through interagency transfers with the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Information Agency, and the National Science Foundation. Subsequent activities, especially in cooperative education and establishing partnerships with non-traditional educational institutions such as trade unions, will be implemented through grants and cooperative agreements.
