Abstract
The workshop was organized by the CK2C Project, with the objective of fostering learning and exchanges among CBNRM practitioners and experts in related international development fields. The workshop aimed to share knowledge and resources, take stock of current strategies, and consider how to evaluate CBNRM practices. The workshop objectives were multifaceted, with Day 1 focusing on learning about CBNRM, its types of activities, landscapes, and regions, as well as conditions for success and how to achieve scale. Participants also explored how CBNRM contributes to multiple development objectives, including climate change adaptation and mitigation, food security, economic development, and democracy, conflict, and humanitarian assistance. The day concluded with sharing CBNRM approaches, resources, information, and tools, as well as identifying how participants can link their office/organization and their own work with CBNRM programs and activities. Day 2 of the workshop focused on obtaining preliminary results and providing input for USAID's global CBNRM assessment. Participants described lessons learned and best practices in designing and implementing CBNRM activities and programs that result in multiple development impacts. The day also featured current state-of-the-art approaches, practices, and tools for effective CBNRM activities and programs, as well as access to tools and other resources for implementing, integrating, and/or evaluating CBNRM activities and programs. The workshop was attended by over 90 participants, with a complete list of in-person attendees available in Annex 3. The workshop proceedings were recorded and broadcast, with 154 CBNRM stakeholders from over 30 countries viewing and participating via webcast. The workshop was also broadcast on Twitter throughout the 2-day session. A summary of the workshop evaluations can be found in Annex 4. CBNRM, or Community-Based Natural Resource Management, is a critical approach to achieving multiple development impacts, including climate change adaptation and mitigation, food security, economic development, and democracy, conflict, and humanitarian assistance. The approach involves community-led management of natural resources, which can lead to improved livelihoods, increased income, and better governance. The workshop featured a wide range of presenters and topics, including the importance of CBNRM for multiple development impacts, multi-sector development programs with CBNRM linkages, and the role of communities in REDD+ negotiations. The workshop also included a gallery walk, where participants had the opportunity to view exhibits and engage in discussions with other stakeholders. The USAID CBNRM Workshop: Cutting Across Multi-Sector Divides was a significant event in the CBNRM community, bringing together stakeholders from around the world to share knowledge, resources, and best practices. The workshop highlighted the importance of CBNRM in achieving multiple development impacts and provided a platform for participants to learn from each other's experiences and expertise. The workshop proceedings, including the detailed program, presenter biographies, and participant list, are available in the annexes. The workshop evaluations and feedback can also be found in Annex 4. The workshop was a valuable opportunity for CBNRM practitioners and experts to come together and share their knowledge and experiences, with the goal of improving CBNRM practices and achieving greater development impacts.
