Project to help the Save the Children Federation (SCF) to undertake a self-sustaining community development effort in the Chambellan area in rural Southwest Haiti.

Abstract
The SCF and the Haitian Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Rural Development (DARNDR) will implement the project. During the first year, approximately 30 strategic groups of 8-15 persons with similar backgounds and concerns will be formed to solve problems and develop program solutions (i.e., development projects) for implementation during the project"s second and third years. The SCF will construct a penetration road to connect three villages with the national highway; install a turbine and generator to supply electricity; provide courses in agriculture and animal husbandry at two schools; organize two tree nurseries that will produce 80,000 seedlings annually; train women to organize strategic groups; train 90 persons in community development; construct five social centers; demonstrate, on peasants" plots, agricultural techniques, soil conservation, use of hybrid seeds, insecticides, and row cropping; sell tools and seeds to farmers and use the revenues to finance a revolving fund; provide a 6-month training course on animal husbandry to two "encadreurs" who will work with peasants; construct, with community participation, a classroom and a home economics instruction building, public latrines, and a slaughterhouse; renovate an additional classroom building; train monitors to offer literacy classes to peasants; contribute to construction of a potable water system and a dispensary; provide nutrition instruction to parents of malnourished children; provide instruction in sewing and embroidery to help women"s groups increase their income; and construct a metal workshop and train artisans and apprentices in its use.
