Abstract
The samples are designed to assess the reading skills of learners, including letter names, sounds, syllables, and words, as well as sentence and story reading comprehension. The assessment criteria for each skill are consistent across all samples. To assess letter names, sounds, syllables, and words, learners are asked to read aloud all 10 items in each of the skills. If the learner reads at least 7 out of 10 items correctly, they are considered to have acquired that skill. To assess sentence reading, learners are asked to read all 5 sentences, and if they read at least 3 out of 5 sentences correctly, they are considered to have acquired the sentence reading skill. To assess story reading, learners are asked to read the story fully, pausing at the full stops, and if they read the story without making more than 2 mistakes, they are considered to have acquired the story reading skill. Finally, to assess story comprehension, learners are asked the 3 comprehension questions orally, one by one, and if they answer at least 2 out of 3 questions correctly, they are considered to have acquired the story comprehension skill. The stories in the samples cover a range of topics, including agriculture, community life, and social issues. The comprehension questions are designed to test learners' understanding of the stories and their ability to apply what they have learned. The samples are intended for learners at different levels, with Sample A covering Mutu 1-4, Sample B covering Mutu 1-9, and Sample C covering Mutu 1-14. The language used in the samples is Chichewa, and the stories are written in a way that is easy for learners to understand. The comprehension questions are also written in Chichewa, and are designed to test learners' ability to think critically and apply what they have learned. Overall, the samples provide a comprehensive assessment of learners' reading skills and comprehension abilities in the Chichewa language. The assessment criteria and the language used in the samples are consistent across all four samples, indicating a standardized approach to language learning and assessment. The samples are designed to be used in a classroom setting, where learners can work through the stories and comprehension questions with the guidance of a teacher or instructor. The language learning materials are intended for learners at different levels, from Mutu 1-4 to Mutu 1-14. The samples provide a range of stories and comprehension questions that are designed to challenge learners and help them improve their reading skills and comprehension abilities. The materials are a valuable resource for language learners and teachers, and can be used to support language learning and assessment in a variety of settings.
