Data collection as a policy tool : a description of HFS collection methods and data sets

To carry out technical assistance and applied research activities to support health financing reform, the Health Financing and Sustainability Project collected a great deal of data from countries around the world.

Abstract

The project has generated 38 data sets on the demand for and the supply of health care. This paper describes those data sets and provides information on the manner in which they were generated and used in the hope that it will benefit future researchers. The paper seeks to answer (and is organized around) four questions: (1) What type of data were collected and by what method? (2) Why were the data needed and collected? (3) How were the data used? (4) How can the data be used in the future? The paper includes an appendix that describes each data set, the size and characteristics of the sample, and the survey instrument. (Author abstract)
