Abstract
However, expertise in designing effective integrated conservation and development projects (ICDP"s) continues to be limited. This paper highlights some recent conclusions about the successful design of ICDP"s, focusing primarily on the nonbiological aspects. The paper is divided into five chapters, discussing: (1) the context of ICDP"s; (2) design issues (site selection, local participation, local stewardship and ownership of resources, and the potential impacts of existing laws and policies); (3) the components of ICDP"s (biological and socioeconomic research/monitoring, environmental management and education, social and economic development, strengthening of local institutions, and establishment of consensus among stakeholders); (4) implementation arrangements that promote partnerships among NGO"s, governments, and local people; and (5) recommendations for implementing agencies. Annexes identify tools useful in developing an ICDP and present a case study of the Annapurna Conservation Area Project in Nepal.
